For my daughter’s first birthday party a few years ago, I went all out and made an entire multi-dish lunch and cake from scratch. It was super stressful and just not necessary. For her next two parties, I decided we would just get pizzas delivered and I would focus my attention on the cake instead, which was much more manageable and fun.

When ordering the pizzas for the parties, I asked the restaurant to do one extra thing for me, and it’s something that I highly recommend all parents do!

My one request? That the pizzas are “double cut,” which means each piece is cut in half.

Why the double cut?

Getting pizzas for a crowd usually means ordering fairly large sizes, and the resulting slices simply aren’t manageable for smaller hands and mouths. Your pizza guy just has to make a few extra cuts and voilà! You get half slices that are easier for kids to pick up and enjoy.

It’s not just for the kids!

There are a few other reasons why I always get double-cut slices. For one, there seems to be fewer wasted half-eaten pieces of pizza lingering after the party. Another is that if you’re serving a few types of pizza, adults get to try a few different slices. No more deciding between meat or vegetarian because you can have one of each! (And a few more.)

Try it!

Lest you think your local pizza joint isn’t familiar with this request, trust me — it is! No one has ever batted an eye when I request the double cut. I’ve even heard the teachers at my daughter’s preschool talk about making sure the pies are double cut when they do pizza parties.

And it’s not just a party trick: I sometimes ask for the double cut when I’m having a casual pizza night at home. I mean, who wants to go through all that cutting trouble when you just want a smidge more pizza? Just let the experts take care of it — they’ve already got the pizza cutter in hand, anyway!

Do you get the double cut?
