The only thing you may actually look forward to cleaning this summer is your freezer. When you think about it, summer is the absolute perfect time to purge and organize your freezer space. We’re getting a thrill just thinking of the chill!

With the right plans and tools, you’ll not only free up space to freeze beautifully ripe summer fruits and veggies, but you’ll also guarantee that you’ll actually be able to find these goodies when the taste and smell of fresh summer produce is nothing but a faint memory. Plus, you may discover long-lost ice pops, meat that’s perfect for the grill, and maybe even some frozen margarita mix. Bonus!

But, before you jump in to tame your kitchen’s frozen tundra, you’ll need one thing to make sure the process goes as smoothly as possible. Can you guess what it is?

You Need a Cooler!

Because you’ll be on the clock while emptying, cleaning, and reorganizing your freezer, you’re going to need to call in some backup: a cooler — or maybe two. Put the stuff you’re keeping directly into a cooler so that your frozen goodies won’t become a wet, weeping mess on your counter while you’re wiping down shelves. Think about it: A pint of ice cream won’t exactly hold up well for an extended amount of time — especially during the summer, whether you have air conditioning or not!

We’re not saying you need to go out and buy a $350 cooler for this job (that would be overkill unless you need a legit cooler for camping, outdoor entertaining, or, say, boating). Any cooler you already have on hand will do. Even that old $20 one that’s been collecting dust in your basement.

Have you used a cooler to help with your freezer clean outs? Got any other fun tricks to share?
