Everyone knows Thanksgiving is all about the side dishes. People like to fuss over how they cook the turkey and whether or not it will be juicy enough and blah blah blah, but the bird doesn’t have a chance in the lineup when there’s mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and green bean casserole to be consumed.

So let’s forget about the bird for a second and talk about what sides you’re having this year for the Big Day. Do you go with the classics? Do you like twists on familiar recipes? When it comes to the most popular green bean casserole recipe on Pinterest, for example, it may look familiar, but it’s anything but. Have you tried this recipe?

The most popular green bean casserole recipe is from Allrecipes. It has been saved over 48,000 times on the social platform this year alone. On Allrecipe’s website there are over 2,000 reviews of the recipe and it has a four-and-a-half-star rating. The recipe was developed by Amy Barry, who describes the dish as “much better than the standard mushroom soup and French fried onion version.”

And Barry is right, the recipe does stray pretty far away from the standard recipe you know and love. To make this green bean casserole you heat up a large skillet with butter. You then add flour, salt, sugar, onion, and sour cream, followed by the green beans. You transfer the mixture to a casserole dish and top it with shredded cheese and breadcrumbs before baking.
