You might want to think twice about ordering the salmon special next time you're out to dinner. Following their report released earlier this year about the mislabeling of Maryland crab cakes, the nonprofit conservation group Oceana released new findings about the mislabeling of another popular seafood item: wild salmon.
While the mislabeling of "wild" salmon was found to occur roughly 20 percent of the time at grocery stores, it jumped to over 65 percent on restaurant menus. Most of the mislabeling has been with farmed Atlantic salmon being sold as wild-caught.
The worst time for this deception is right now, when salmon is out of season. A major source of the problem is accuracy in tracing the origin of the fish, since processing often occurs overseas.
