I Tried TikTok’s Wildly Popular Rice Waffle Recipe, and Sushi Fans Are Going to Love This One
In a world of trending recipes and creative spins being applied to old dishes, I continuously find myself getting caught up in the hype of the unique offerings found on TikTok. No matter if it’s sweet or savory, I’m always up to give a TikTok favorite a try. And just like viral recipes such as pancake spaghetti, lobster grilled cheese, air fryer salad, and Hong Kong-style French toast, this recipe for teriyaki prawns and avocado on a rice waffle helped me find my way right back into the kitchen to flex my cooking chops.
Garnering more than a million views on the platform, this recipe — posted by @victoriaminell — really sparked my interest. For my friends and family who love sushi, I knew it could be something that they would enjoy me making when they come over to visit. I mean, who wouldn’t want to try a sushi rice waffle? It’s simple, quick, and easy.

How to Make Teriyaki Prawns and Avocado on a Rice Waffle
For this recipe, you’ll need just a few ingredients: prawns, avocado, rice, and cucumber. I recommend cooking your rice first before prepping the remainder of your ingredients, as it takes a while to finish.
Add oil to the bottom of a medium-size pan (I used my Always Pan that I keep close by for my cooking needs), using enough oil to coat the bottom. This will keep your prawns from sticking and burning. While the TikTok video doesn’t say this, I recommend patting your prawns dry before putting them in the pan to remove any excess water. You don’t want to have any hot grease popping on you due to water being in the mix. Once your prawns turn pink, they’re ready to be removed from the pan. Place them in a bowl, tossing them in your favorite teriyaki sauce, then set aside.
Once your rice is done cooking, add a few scoops to your waffle maker, covering the bottom plate fully. The next part is a bit tricky because the timing for leaving the rice in the waffle maker depends on your waffle maker, as well as the level of crunch you want for your rice waffle. The creator noted in the comments that the waffler maker needs to be on and hot for at least five minutes without shutting off itself, but I would encourage you to keep an eye on it to get it to the level of crispiness you desire.
Finally, grab your avocado and place it on top of your rice waffle along with enough cucumber and prawns to coat the top of your rice waffle before enjoying!
My Honest Opinion
This recipe was good and I enjoyed the concept of it. The difficulty I experienced with this dish, however, happened when I added the rice to the waffle maker. It was suggested to cook until the rice was brown/crispy, but unfortunately, the rice was too hard for consumption my first time around. And truthfully, even the second time I tried it — although better than the first — the rice waffle didn’t come out the way I would have expected it to.
Everything else about the dish and its preparations was great, and it’s definitely a light lift for anyone trying to enjoy a quick and easy meal. I will say, though, that after a few not-so-great attempts at getting the rice waffle made, I found it to be more enjoyable just turning the dish into a rice bowl with all the toppings instead.
If You’re Making the TikTok-Famous Teriyaki Prawns & Avocado on Rice Waffle, a Few Tips
- Don’t be afraid to experiment. While the original recipe uses prawns, cucumber, and avocado, if you want to use different proteins or veggie toppings, go for it!
- Be creative. As with any recipe, you want to season your dish to suit your taste. If teriyaki isn’t your favorite thing, choose something different to add with your prawns and avocado.
- Add some sauce. Mix some Sriracha, mayonnaise, and a little soy sauce for a great topping.
