The electric pressure cooker is the underdog of the small kitchen appliance world. While a slow cooker has a “set it and forget it” motto, the pressure cooker requires more learning and attending to. An electric pressure cooker, however, can marry the convenience of the slow cooker with the speed and greater versatility of a pressure cooker.

Buying your first electric pressure cooker can be a little daunting. Are you in the market for an electric pressure cooker? How do you decide? We want to help!

If you haven’t used a pressure cooker before, it can be a little intimidating. You’re using a new kind of science in the kitchen (steam pressure! faster cooking!), and you can’t really open it and taste along the way, as compared to cooking something on a pot on the stove.

But many pressure cooker advocates say you can replace your slow cooker and rice cooker thanks to a pressure cooker. If you live in a small apartment, you know this is important information.

There are two kinds of pressure cookers: electric and stovetop. For this set of reviews, we are focusing just on electric pressure cookers, because they are easier to use if you’re new to pressure cooking. Electric pressure cookers are more hands-off, but since they don’t reach as high of a pressure, they need longer cook times.
