Hold on to your napkins, folks! Taco Bell has announced that their beloved Mexican Pizza will be back on menus next month. Since permanently removing the much-loved menu item, fans have been vocal about their desire for its return, even starting a change.org petition with over 200,000 signatures. And now, it seems as if the brand is finally listening.

The fast-food brand is infamous for breaking our hearts by discontinuing items, but none was more surprising than when they pulled the plug on the Mexican Pizza in 2020 after a decades-long run and cult following. Unfortunately for fans of the iconic eat, the news wasn’t just an experiment gone wrong like the Firecracker Burrito (which included a spicy version of Pop Rocks) or a boardroom joke that went too far like the Naked Egg Taco (a “taco” that used an egg for its shell). It was unbelievably true and broke the hearts of millions. And, to top it all off, the announcement came during the height of the pandemic, a time when we were trying to hold on to any happiness we had left.

To categorize Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza is to take away from its magic. The item consists of a layer of ground beef and refried beans nestled between two tortilla shells, topped with cheese, pizza sauce, and chopped tomatoes. It is part sandwich, part tostada, and a full-out lifestyle. It was my go-to when I was undecided on what to order or craving a little bit of everything. And now that it’s back, all is right in the world again.

DoorDash has first dibs on the iconic menu item, so fans looking to have it home-delivered will need to order through the delivery app during the first week (May 19 – May 26). It will be available on other delivery platforms beginning May 27. Likewise, Taco Bell loyalty members will have early access to the returning item on May 17.

Taco Bell recipes such as their nacho fries and cheesy gordita crunch are some of my favorite fast foods to recreate at home because they’re much more straightforward than other fast food copycat recipes. Now that the Mexican Pizza is back though, I’m glad I’ll be making less of it and enjoying the real thing again.

And just in case you think this is a late April Fool’s joke, the return was also documented during multi-talented artist Doja Cat’s Coachella set this past weekend. Check out the clip below.
