Sweetheart snack mix is a Valentine’s Day treat I’ve been making since my youngest started preschool. It came from a desire to send a classroom treat that was lower in sugar than candy, but just as fun. The base recipe is essentially a lightly-sweetened version of our classic snack mix, except this one bakes in the oven instead of the slow cooker.

Though it started out as a toddler treat, this snack mix is great for kids and adults of all ages — it’s a great thing to have on hand in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Here’s how to make it your own.

Add Your Own Flair to Sweetheart Snack Mix

This snack mix is incredibly customizable, which means you can make it to suit your own tastes and with whatever is in your pantry. As long as you stick to a ratio of six cups cereal to 1 egg white and one-half cup sugar, you can use any combination of cereal, chips, crackers and pretzels. We love Chex, Cheerios, and goldfish pretzels, but Kix and mini pretzel twists are just as fun and can be baked right along with the cereal.

Any other additions should be added after the mix has baked and cooled. Dried and freeze-dried fruit as well as yogurt bites, chocolate covered raisins, and even mini marshmallows can be added to dress up the snack mix and make it more festive.
