If you own a pair of dishwashing gloves, you know this is a $10 purchase that’s totally worth it. They make gross tasks less gross, protect your hands from scalding water, and keep your fingers from getting nicked on sharp objects. If you own a pair of dishwashing gloves, you know all this — but did you know you can also use your trusty gloves for non-dishwashing tasks?

Here are three surprising things a pair of dishwashing gloves can do for you.

1. They can pick up pet hair from upholstery.

If you have pets, you know that cleaning up pet hair is one of the worst parts of being a pet owner. Seriously, though: How do they get so much hair everywhere? For me, my circa-1978 maroon-and-white-striped sofa is the hairiest: My dog leans against the side of it and it looks like a wooly mammoth shed his entire coat there.

Enter: Your rubber dishwashing glove. You can use it dry or dampen with water, but all you have to do is run your gloved hand over the surface and collect all that fur. Warning: You may have to rinse and repeat if your critter is extra fuzzy.

There are all sorts of special gadgets and gizmos to help you open jars, but who needs an extra unitasker sitting around when you can use your dish glove? All you have to do is use the hand of the glove as a grip to get that stubborn lid off. No need for super-human strength — promise.

3. They can be transformed into rubber bands.

If you’ve decided your gloves have had it, don’t toss them — cut them into rubber bands. Just cut horizontally across the gloves to create surprisingly sturdy rubber bands of varying sizes and widths. The fingers make small rubber bands, and the sleeve parts make much larger ones, which can come in handy with bulkier items.
