Whenever possible I try to avoid buying groceries with chemicals (it’s just a personal preference and value), which is why food-coloring products often used to make frosting give me pause. But the reality is that, unless I want to grate beets all afternoon or squeeze soooo many lemons or limes in an attempt to coax some color, I’m pretty much stuck with cream cheese frosting. (It’s delicious, but not exactly vibrant.)

This sadness at a lack of natural-colored frostings was true until I tried Supernatural Frosting Mix, which I spotted at my local natural-foods store, Outpost Natural Foods.

What’s So Great About Supernatural Fruit Punch Red Frosting Mix?

Not only does this product tick all of the boxes for gluten-free, dairy-free, plant-based, and all-natural (no dyes or preservatives), but it’s also a fun color: Fruit Punch Red. Although, to be honest, the end result was more purple-y than it was red. I also liked how the package flat-out says it’s “for busy bakers.”

What shocked me, however, is that the consistency is just as smooth and fluffy as the ready-made frosting tubs sold in stores near boxed-cake mixes. That’s not always the case without those additives! The flavor was sweet, but not overly sweet, and a near match to those tubs I’d been using for years.

What’s the Best Way to Enjoy Supernatural Fruit Punch Red Frosting Mix?

All you have to do to make frosting out of this mix is add butter (or vegan butter) with water. This is what thickens the frosting and makes it easy to spread.

Half of one package was enough to frost 30 cupcakes, so I froze the rest to use later. I could see using this frosting mix around the winter holidays to frost cookies (that purple hue would look great on a cookie shaped like an ornament, mitten, or stocking, right?) or a layered cake to enjoy after a cozy dinner in.

Next, for the upcoming cookie-decorating season, I want to try the Forest Green color for some Christmas tree cut-outs. Sugar cookies are relatively inexpensive to make, so I don’t mind splurging on a preservative-free (and gorgeous) frosting.
