Walmart, Whole Foods, Target, and More Are Recalling Frozen Fruit — Here’s Why
Multiple brands of frozen fruit are being recalled across multiple states due to possible contamination with listeria monocytogenes, as was announced on July 21 by SunOpta Inc.’s subsidiary, Sunrise Growers Inc. The announcement, which was made public by the FDA, highlights specific frozen fruit products that were linked to pineapple by a third-party supplier, similar to the recent recall announced by Costco.
Ingestion of products that have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can lead to infections in young children, elderly or frail people, as well as those who have weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals are less at risk but may suffer only from short-term symptoms such as high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Furthermore, Listeria infections can — in some extreme cases — cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Retailers who received distribution of the products in question include Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, Aldi, and AWG. The states in which these retailers are located, as well as the specific products and lot codes in question, can be found here. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this voluntary recall, although any consumers who are unsure or concerned about an illness are encouraged to seek help from your physician. If you think that you have purchased one of the products detailed in the recall, please return them to the store you purchased them from immediately.
While you check through your refrigerator and cabinets, make sure to catch up on other recently notable recalls including Johnsonville Sausages and 400,000 waffle makers.
