The book: Sugar Rush by Johnny Iuzzini
The angle: A whole pastry school course, rolled up in one super-fun cookbook.
Recipes for right now: Ginger Spice Ice Cream, Chocolate Soufflé, Espresso Marshmallows, Chipotle Churros, Jamaican Christmas Cake, Vanilla Sponge Cake, Butternut Maple Blondies, Chocolate-Caramel Tart
Who would enjoy this book? Home bakers who want to learn the ropes while also making some killer treats.
• Who wrote it: Johnny Iuzzini
• Who published it: Clarkson Potter
• Number of recipes: Over 150
• Other highlights: I really love the way this cookbook breaks down complicated baking recipes — each component of the final pastry or cake gets broken down and deciphered. We also get master recipes for things like cream puffs and pastry cream followed by tons of variations. It's easy to mix-and-match and build our own recipes. Iuzzini also includes an incredible amount of detail in this book, both in vibrant step-by-step images and in detailed explanations of techniques and baking terms (do you know your French meringue from your Swiss?!).
