There are few treats cozier than a tray of warm brownies as the weather cools off, making them the perfect snack for greeting guests who come over to carve pumpkins or for bringing to the school’s fall festival. Making brownies even better — whether with an ingredient upgrade or a quick topping — is the kind of fast and fancy festive flair we all need during the fall holiday season.

Here’s a great way to make your brownies go boo! for Halloween: Using a spooky stencil, dust your favorite batch of brownies with powdered sugar for a fuss-free spooky topping.

First, Make the Brownies

Before you can transform a pan of brownies into a Halloween treat, you’ll need to mix up the batter. Below is our recipe for homemade chewy brownies, but a good box of brownie mix works just as well (here’s our readers’ favorite brownie box mix).

And if all you want is a brownie for one, we’ve got you covered there as well.

How to Make Spooky Stencil Brownies

You can pick up cake stencils from your local bakery supply shop or craft store, or you can order them online. (Here are Halloween cake stencils at Amazon.)

Once your pan of brownies is cool, coat the underside of the stencil with a thin layer of oil or nonstick spray before setting it gently on the cake. Sift over a generous portion of powdered sugar and carefully remove the stencil to reveal your powdered sugar print.
