Starting Today, You Can Get Oatly Oat Milk at Starbucks
Oatly, the dairy alternative milk made from oats that blasted onto the scene a few years ago and has since only become more popular, will be available on the menu at Starbucks all over the U.S. starting March 2 (that’s today!), reports MarketWatch. Oatly will be available for substitution into any drink, along with Starbucks’ previous non-dairy options of soy, coconut, and almond milks. It also shows up in two new drinks: the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, and the Honey Oatmilk Latte (which was previously available only at some locations).
The vegan, gluten-free (in the U.S. only) milk is accessible to people with allergies, sensitivities, or other dietary restrictions. It has less environmental impact than dairy milk and almond milk. But most importantly for many coffee drinkers, it interacts with coffee in much the way that dairy milk does, making it a good substitute for people looking to replace dairy in their morning drink.
Starbucks had previously announced that it would begin using oat milk nationwide by spring, but this week’s announcement finalized that it would be Oatly and set the date. “When selecting an oatmilk, we looked for a high-quality ingredient that is not only delicious, but also complements our coffees and inspires new handcrafted beverages,” explained Luigi Bonini, senior vice president, Global Product Innovation at Starbucks in a press release.
Oatly has dominated the U.S. oat milk market since its introduction here, including getting a $200 million investment last summer from a group comprised of Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Portman, Jay-Z, and (naturally) former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. And then, last week, just before the Starbucks announcement, CNN Business reported that Oatly filed its first IPO forms with the SEC, indicating that it hopes to go public in the near future, although when, how many shares it will offer, and the price, are not yet available.
