Starbucks has over 24,000 stores in 70 countries. But Starbucks Japan has something 69 other countries don't have: matcha pudding in small latte cups.
Starbucks Japan introduced the new product on Instagram, revealing the cute packaging. "Matcha-flavored pudding emerges tomorrow. There are three kinds of package designs," reads the caption on the March 31 post, reports TeenVogue.
The pudding, which boasts a "dense matcha flavor," is served in a little green-colored Starbucks-style latte cup. At the bottom of the cup is a thick, rich matcha sauce. Each cup has a different motivational quote slapped across it with a handwritten effect: "It's time to start!" "Make someone's day," or "Each day is a gift."
Puddings were released at Starbucks Japan last year and they've proven to be very popular. When Starbucks took to social media on the last day of March to release the matcha flavor, many took it as an April Fool's joke. But come April 1, the product was in franchises across Japan for 320 yen (2.88 USD, at 111 yen to the dollar).
Matcha is, without a doubt, having a moment. The finely ground green tea is lauded for its health benefits: it is rich in antioxidants and fiber, can aide in weight loss, and has calming properties. Traditionally, the tea boasts an earthy flavor and is prepared by whisking the ground green powder into water. Now, there's matcha-flavored everything — it's not just tea! — from Kit Kats and cakes to chocolates and face masks.
While we patiently wait, hoping that Starbucks releases this treat in other countries, there are other matcha-flavored products to try at Starbucks. Like the "matcha pink drink" that went viral on Instagram for its pink to green ombré coloring created by freeze-dried strawberries and matcha. Or the "green drink" made of iced black tea, matcha powder, and coconut milk. Or try a DIY green tea pudding.
