I Tried the New “IT” Frappuccino at Starbucks and Here’s What I Thought
Starbucks fans have done it again — they’ve created a “secret menu” item that’s obviously going to go viral. And this time it’s inspired by Pennywise the Dancing Clown from IT Chapter 2, so ya know, you can watch that while sipping on this frightful beverage that resembles splattered blood! Spooky.
Here’s what the drink entails: it’s the Vanilla Bean Crème Frappuccino without the espresso along with strawberry puree syrup on the bottom and top. So, it’s basically a super sweet vanilla milkshake with strawberry goo. (Not so scary after all.) Obviously, I had to try this thing myself.
My Review of the “IT” Frappuccino at Starbucks
As someone who drinks Starbucks on the regular, I have to say this was probably one of my least favorite Starbucks drinks I’ve had. But here’s the thing: I do NOT like vanilla-flavored things (yogurt, milkshakes, ice cream without something chocolate inside, etc.) and I also don’t like super sweet drinks to begin with. The strawberry purée was overwhelmingly sweet to me. I like fresh strawberries with whipped cream, but that’s totally different.
Now, if this were a chocolate Frappuccino with perhaps some bananas, whip, and peanut butter, I’d be totally down, where it’d be JUST as sweet but taste amazing for my palate. (ATTENTION STARBUCKS — CAN YOU WORK ON THIS AND NAME IT “THE IZZIE?”)
I did give the rest of the drink to a friend at my WeWork office and he happened to LOVE it — no joke — so clearly for those who like vanilla and strawberry, it seems like a winning milkshake right there.
How to Order It
If you want to give this drink a try, you should start by knowing that you can’t just ask for it — your barista WILL NOT know what the hell you’re talking about and everyone on line behind you will judge you immensely. I learned this the hard way. Instead, you need to give some instructions, which happen to be super straightforward!
- Pick a size. Grab a tall, grande, or venti. The trenta isn’t allowed in a Frappuccino. And honestly guys, though I am biased, you don’t want a trenta of this sugar bomb.
- Order a Vanilla Bean Crème Frappuccino. Since you’re getting the crème version and not the espresso version, it’ll be free of caffeine and just have the vanilla taste.
- Ask for strawberry puree on top. Now is time for the blood! You’ll ask for the syrup to be added to the cup first for extra (and a more Instagrammable post, TBH) and then on top of the whipped cream, too.
The white and red resembles both Pennywise’s face as a spooky clown and the idea of dripping blood, which goes with the Halloween theme.
So, there you have it! Treat yourself to this spooky-but-oh-so-sweet concoction and see what you think! It costs $6.08 in a grande, so it’s a little pricy for the customization, but it’s not overboard.
