When it comes to sandwiches and discussing the classics, it would be pretty hard to ignore the grilled cheese sandwich. Somewhat of a go-to for all ages, the grilled cheese proves that the simplest things in life can bring us an abundance of joy (and its versatile nature makes for some pretty delicious spin-offs, too).

This sentiment is even shared among experts in their own culinary spaces like Stanley Tucci, who recently discussed his fondness for grilled cheeses on an episode of Margie Nomura’s Desert Island Dishes podcast. In the episode, the Inside Man star shared his personal spin on the classic, which led to Nomura posting her spin on Tucci’s grilled cheese to TikTok for us all to enjoy.

So how does Stanley do it? Using ingredients from his ancestral homeland, of course, the Searching for Italy host actually turns his grilled cheese into a melt by using sliced prosciutto (but we aren’t going to get into technicalities here). Start off by layering the bread with shredded white cheddar cheese or Gouda, then add a layer of prosciutto before adding fresh mozzarella and basil. If you don’t have basil on hand, pesto works perfectly as an alternative.

Next, spread butter over both sides of the sandwich and warm it over low heat in a nonstick pan. Once the cheese has melted, remove the sandwich from the pan, slice it in half, and take that glorious first bite that we imagine would transport you straight to Italy.
