The 5 Best Hacks Every Stand Mixer Owner Should Know
A stand mixer is a staple of many home cooks’ kitchens — and it can be also be an amazing focal point. It’s sculptural! It’s industrial! It comes in so many different colors! On the flip side, a stand mixer can be big and bulky and presents a fair share of other problems you might not have anticipated before you decided to spring for one. But don’t fret — there’s probably a hack for whatever it is that’s ruining your stand mixer state of bliss.
Here are five of the best hacks every stand mixer owner should know:
1. Store your attachments in the bowl.
Here’s a universal complaint of stand-mixer owners: The attachments come in odd shapes that are hard to store. This is true — until you realize that the big mixing bowl is actually the ideal place to store them! Place a towel in there first, so they don’t scratch the bowl, and it’ll also be easier to pull out the accessories.
2. Keep the cord out of sight.
Another common complaint of these display-worthy small appliances? The cord looks messy on the countertop. The solution: Use a Command Cord Bundler to gather up the cord. Stick it to the back of the appliance, loop up the cord, and hook it into place. Problem solved! (We’re also a big fan of The Cord Wrapper!)
3. Make it easier to move.
Stand mixers are heavy and bulky, which can make them difficult to scoot out when you’re ready to put them to work. Unless, that is, you place yours on top of a folded dish towel, like the Krazy Coupon Lady did. (A placemat, cutting boards, or tray works just as well.)
4. Keep the mess contained.
Chances are if you have a stand mixer, you have also sent flour flying all over the place. But this problem is totally avoidable with the right shield. I’ve seen all kinds of hacks on the internet (including using a shower cap!), but in my opinion, the best hack is the easiest: Just grab a dish towel and drape it over the mixer while you’re adding ingredients. You likely have one close by and you’re not adding extra accessories to the process.
5. Change up the color.
A highlight of stand mixers is that they often come in really cool colors. But maybe you bought your stand mixer when you were in your blue period, or maybe you remodeled your kitchen and now your stand mixer just doesn’t go? Well, don’t run out and buy a new one. You can actually repaint your stand mixer. It takes some patient taping and the right kind of spray paint, but the result is fabulous and totally custom, too.
