This Ingenious Lettuce Storage Hack Keeps Leaves Crisp and Fresh for Days
If you’re a lover of anything salad-related, then you know how important it is to keep your large bulk purchases of lettuce fresh for as long as possible. No matter how much you might love to customize a bowl of crispy, freshly washed leaves, it’s hard to finish all of it before some of it starts to spoil.
While we’ve tried a range of different techniques for washing salad greens as well as a variety of methods for storing greens in the fridge, we recently came across a slightly different method for keeping the leaves fresh. This particular method, however, uses height to help preserve fresh lettuce.
TikTok user Emma Mavilla (AKA emma_mavilla), shared a video in which she makes a “go-to salad recipe” that includes lettuce, chicken, shredded carrots, mozzarella cheese, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, and croutons.
One hidden gem within the video, however, starts with the chopped lettuce itself. Mavilla stores her lettuce in a tall plastic food container, with individual portions of chopped lettuce, divided by sheets of paper towels! Paper towels are commonly used in storing lettuce and other salad greens, but stacking them in between the pre-divided portions of lettuce is simple but clever.
In addition to soaking up excess moisture on the lettuce leaves, the paper towels also act as a meal prep divider. You can fill a tall, rectangular food container with single servings of chopped lettuce for salads. As Mavilla shows in the video, you can simply transfer the lettuce each day from the container to a bowl for quick meals.
