As I find myself right at the midpoint of my first pregnancy, I also find myself gazing longingly at the menus of some of my favorite sushi spots. While I’m opting not to eat those raw tuna or salmon rolls for the next few months, one of my favorite condiments is still very much on the table: spicy mayo.
If you have ever wondered what the delicious dollop or drizzle on top of your sushi rolls is made of, this is the answer. It’s a spicy combination of mayonnaise and Sriracha hot sauce. There is also a dash of sesame oil and a bit of fresh lime juice for balance. This spicy mayo is a classic match for sushi rolls, but it can also be used as a versatile dip or spread.
What Is Spicy Mayo Made of?
Spicy mayo is a simple combination of mayonnaise and a hot sauce. The spicy mayonnaise you might find served with your favorite sushi is frequently made with Sriracha hot sauce.
However, you can make variations by using other spicy mix-ins. Try chopped chipotle peppers with adobo sauce from the can to make a Tex-Mex spicy mayo. Southern-style spicy mayo can be made with Tabasco or Crystal hot sauce. Give spicy mayo a North African twist by using harissa.
Is Spicy Mayo the Same as Yum Yum Sauce?
While the two sauces are similar in appearance, spicy mayo is different from yum yum sauce. Yum yum sauce is not spicy and the signature color comes from ketchup rather than a hot sauce.
What Can I Use Spicy Mayo For?
Spicy mayo is a versatile condiment. It can be enjoyed with sushi, or as a flavorful dip or spread. It is a great as a dip for french fries, as well as slathered on a sandwich or hamburger bun.
