The Slim, Stylish Trash Can That Saves So Much Space in My Tiny Bathroom
If you’re a regular AT reader and home decor enthusiast like the rest of us here, you’ll probably agree with me when I say I want everything in my apartment to look good — even the small, seemingly inconsequential things. This includes items you might not associate with nice aesthetics, like toilet brushes and chip bag clips. So, when I moved into a new place a couple of weeks ago, you’d best believe I already had a list of all the new stuff I wanted, down to the bamboo cooking utensils. One of the most pressing items on my list was a trash can for the bathroom — and not just any dowdy old bin. The first place I looked was, unsurprisingly, simplehuman. The brand is known for its refined home goods, especially when it comes to trash cans. One of their newest releases, the slim step can, instantly caught my eye. I ended up getting a set of two for my bathroom and bedroom, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with them.
What is the slim step can?
simplehuman has a host of small trash cans ranging from a 1.5-liter capacity to a 25-liter size. For my purposes, this 5-liter can is perfect. The one in my bathroom gets more use, and although I empty it every week, I think it could go a lot longer without needing to be emptied — that’s how roomy it is. Despite its impressive capacity, the trash can doesn’t take up a lot of space; I’ve placed it between my toilet and the wall, and there’s still plenty of floor space to spare in that area. Of course, this is a step can, so I don’t have to touch or press the can to open it. I just flip the top up with my foot, throw in the trash, and let go. The lid closes slowly and quietly, without making a slamming noise.
Another cool feature is the built-in liner pocket, which is discreetly hidden behind the removable interior bucket. Together, these features allow you to easily empty and replace the liners. You can purchase simplehuman’s custom-fit liners, or you can use other plastic bags you have lying around from grocery trips, which is what I do sometimes.
Why I Love the Slim Step Can
Aside from how functional the trash can is, I couldn’t be happier with how it looks. I opted for a two-pack of the white color, which matches pretty much everything in my apartment: the walls, doors, toilet, tub, sink, etc. It even matches my plunger! I also like that the trash cans are cohesive between my bedroom and bathroom, which are right next to each other; mismatched finishes are not the vibe. Although the can also comes in black and has a fingerprint-free brushed silver finish, the white one also does not easily show fingerprints. But most of all, I love my trash cans’ narrow design and small footprint, which allows them to sit out of the way, even though I use them throughout the day. You might be thinking that $60-$70 is a lot to spend on a trash can, and I don’t disagree. But I think these cans are totally worth it, especially when I know I’m going to have them for years and never tire of their sleek design.
