Simone Biles’ Stunning New Kitchen Is a Perfect 10 (It’s a Black-and-White Dream!)
Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles is proving that she’s a force to be reckoned with, on and off the mat! After marrying fellow athlete Jonathan Owens in 2023, the newlyweds decided it was time to carve out their own space for their first chapter as a couple. And they found that space in Texas — kind of.
Rather than buying an existing home and adding personal touches within, Biles opted to build her own custom home from the ground up. The gymnast has treated fans to a behind-the-scenes look at the construction process, documenting the highs and lows of the build on social media, specifically via Instagram stories. After the frame was complete, Biles began working on the home’s interior, infusing striking design choices and expert-approved details into her new space.
The couple’s entire space is dreamy, but their stunningly sleek new kitchen is a real showstopper. Below, let’s dive into the design to help you re-create the same modern-meets-functional aspects in your own space. (See photos of the under-construction space here!).
Stick to a consistent color palette.
Before revealing her kitchen, Biles shared photos of the progress in other areas of her home. She stuck to a black-and-white color palette, interspersed with pops of light wood, in every room. Viewers got a glimpse of the black cabinetry in her bathroom as well as the abstract black and white tiled wall in what appears to be a laundry room, followed by the stunning black and white kitchen marble. Sticking to the same color scheme throughout the house, mixing it up with different patterns, creates a sense of stylish cohesion that is easily replicable in any home.
Start with black-and-white marble.
Black-and-white marble is the decor trend that keeps on giving, resurfacing every few years like clockwork, and ultimately becoming a new classic. I love that Biles chose to incorporate marble throughout the room, from the stunning black-and-white stone countertops to her kitchen island and backsplash.
Ellen Marie Bennett, the founder of Hedley & Bennett and host of the new kitchen design TV show, Tastemade’s Kitchen Glow Up, agrees that marble is an excellent choice: “Marble always tends to need a lot of attention to remain in perfect condition, but in this case, the texture of the black-and-white marble hides any blemishes or stains, making it the perfect choice when choosing the best stone for your countertop.”
Add a kitchen island.
The striking marble extends from the countertops onto the kitchen island, allowing both portions of the room to excel in style and functionality. Bennett says, “If you have the space for a kitchen island, I always say go for it! It’s a great addition to any kitchen as it acts as an extra working space whether you’re prepping for a meal or need a place to prop your laptop.”
While many homeowners forego the tried-and-true kitchen island, this is one trend we can get behind. This piece makes solo cooking and dining far easier, but there’s a social component, too. “If you’re hosting a gathering, friends always love to hover around the island, making it awesome for a sitting area and a spot to nosh on,” Bennett tells us.
Experiment with unique cabinetry.
Biles’ cabinets bridge the gap between classic and modern. While she opted for a neutral white shade, I love the open frame design, which allows a peekaboo effect, thanks to the pairing of traditional and glass doors (similar to Oprah’s!). I can’t wait to see what she chooses to display on the other side.
Consider waterfall countertops.
Love them or hate them, waterfall countertops seem to be everywhere as of late. And for good reason! The vertically extending sides create an added level of drama to counter and island silhouettes, putting myself firmly in the pro-waterfall camp.
Bennett agrees, sharing that “I love a waterfall countertop because it always gives a kitchen a timeless, beautiful design that’s the first thing spotted from the moment someone steps into the room. It’s a bold statement with its clean edges and makes kitchens come alive. What’s great about waterfall countertops is that it can feel like a luxury without actually costing you one.”
