Store History

  • Founded: 2003
  • Founded by: Keiko and Taku Shinomoto
  • Headquarters: Los Angeles, California

It's been a while since we first profiled Los Angeles store Tortoise in 2006, and the New Year seems like a good time to revisit this simple, unlcuttered Japanese import shop. Now with two locations and a newly renovated/expanded store to their name, husband and wife team Keiko and Taku Shinomoto continue to focus on long-lasting, durable products that are functional and beautiful.

The kettles, bowls, and silverware here aren't cheap, though there are a few lower-priced items in the mix, including Japanese fabrics that can be used for napkins or placemats. This is the kind of store to check when you're looking for something substantial and unique that will last, whether for yourself or for a gift.

In addition to its two brick and mortar stores, Tortoise has an online shop. They ship nationally (not internationally) and shipping charges are calculated in the checkout process.
