These Grown-Up Treats Will Make You Feel Like a Kid Again
We are Big Snackers here at Kitchn. We love snacking, talking about snacking, and writing about snacking.
Of course, snacking looks different for everyone. So we asked four of our favorite food people to build their ultimate Kitchn Snack Capsule, featuring one recipe and some store-bought snacks. Up next: Shanika Graham-White from Orchids + Sweet Tea.
I remember actually getting a chance to bury a time capsule when I was in school. We each had to write a letter to our future selves and also include our favorite drawings that we had created in school. I can still picture my teacher bringing the whole class out, onto the lawn of the school, where there was a deep hole waiting for us — along with a metal capsule-y-looking storage container. At the time, I remember thinking, “How cool will this be to dig up again in a ton more years?!”
Of course, I never dug it up. I’m not sure if anyone ever did. I’m also not sure how my chosen elements would have held up over time. Would my note to Today Me hit home? Would those drawings do a good-enough job to remind me of who I was back then? I’m not too sure. So when the folks at Kitchn asked me to create a snack capsule, I took the assignment seriously.
The assignment was to assemble my ultimate snack capsule. I was asked to highlight a handful of snacks that I love to eat on a regular basis: something I like to make and a few store-bought treats. I knew right away what snacks I’d include. All in good fun, I decided to get a wooden box and I even engraved it as a way to point back to this moment many years later. (Of course, I plan on eating all of these snacks right away, but this post will remain!)
This snack capsule that I created for Kitchn comes packed with my essential snacks: Unreal Candy Coated Chocolate with Crispy Quinoa, Enjoy Life Soft Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies, my own Vegan Chocolate Chip Chia Seed Muffins, and Nature’s Path Organic Frosted Strawberry Toaster Pastries.

Why these snacks? For one, they’re mostly vegan. I’m not an all-the-time vegan, but my site has, what I call, an explosion of vegan recipes. (I believe in trying all sorts of different diets). These snacks also hit a note of nostalgia for me. Who doesn’t want to snack on something that brings them back to their childhood? And they’re all part of a great snapshot of who I am today. So if Future Me were to see this box (or post), she’d have great insight into 2022 Shanika. She’d also find herself suddenly very in the mood for Toaster Pastries.
