Seasonal Spotlight: Peppers
‘Tis the season for fresh peppers of all kinds. From hot to sweet, purple to green to orange, peppers are here.
While most people think of peppers as vegetables, they are actually fruits! Bell peppers and what we call chili peppers are a genus called Capsicum, which is part of the nightshade family. Tomatoes also are part of the nightshade family. Most capsicum varieties originated in the New World and were brought to the Old World and parts of Asia by European explorers.
Peppers are very versatile – you can eat them raw or cooked. They also preserve well in cannings and picklings.
