Other highlights: This cookbook is like a tantalizing buffet consisting entirely of ice cream. I feel like I’m getting a little taste of this and a nibble of that — the Orange Chocolate Decadence from Bev’s Homemade Ice Cream in Virginia in one spoonful and Green Tea Ice Cream from Dave’s Hawaiian Ice Cream in the next. Some of these ice creams are simple, others are the very embodiment of the zany-flavored artisan ice cream craze — but all are in some way representative of the state or region where the ice cream shop calls home.

From a home cook’s perspective, I like the approach of this cookbook quite a lot. Here we get not just one ice cream maker’s perspective, but dozens. We are introduced to such diverse ingredients as guava jam from a Cuban-influenced shop in Miami and huckleberries from Montana, and we can try our hand at several different ice cream making techniques.
