Savory Valentines: Pink Goat Cheese Hearts from Joy the Baker

Valentine's Day usually arrives with all the violence of a sugar bomb, leaving spatters of frosting and smears of chocolate in its wake, so I'm always attracted to gentler, more savory ways to mark the holiday. So these goat cheese hearts from Joy the Baker are a total delight! Want to see how she makes them?

Joy confesses in this post that she too is giving her sweet tooth a break, celebrating Valentine's instead with a green salad dotted with hot pink hearts.

The trick? Shredded beets, a natural sweetheart for goat cheese at any time of year. She mixes the two together, then pats them into a flat disc and freezes until firm. After this the cheese can be cut into any shape you like, although of course the pink begs for tiny hearts.

On a salad, like this green confection, or served with roasted beets for beet on beet action, these are a really terrific idea and one I'm swiping as soon as I can get a party planned.
