When it comes to spreading jam and jelly on sandwiches, a classic PB&J is just the beginning. For instance, have you ever tried grilled cheese with strawberry jam or other preserves? Read on for some more savory ideas…

Grilled cheese: Adding jam or jelly to grilled cheese is not as strange as it might sound. Think of cheese plates, where sweet, tangy fruit and savory, creamy cheese are perfect complements to one another. We love cheddar cheese with strawberry jam, plum jam, or cherry chutney.

Turkey sandwich: Marisa McClellan of Food in Jars likes spreading apricot preserves on turkey sandwiches. “It makes me feel like I’m eating lunch at a gourmet cafe instead of at my dining room table,” she writes.

Goat cheese tartine: Citrus marmalade, pomegranate jelly, fig jam … all of these work beautifully with creamy chèvre cheese.

Croque monsieur: We’ve seen versions of this French hot ham and cheese sandwich with a light spread of raspberry jam, elderberry, and even grape jelly.
