Royal Baby Cheddar Exists, and Here’s Where You Can Get It

If you happen to be combing through the cheese aisle of your local Whole Foods store, then you may have noticed Royal Addition Cheddar, a limited-edition cheese made in honor of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s newborn son.

“Celebrate the birth of Great Britain’s future heir with this wonderfully creamy yet savory 12 month cheddar,” the sign reads at the Whole Foods in Boston’s South End, where our spies spotted this stack. “Cow’s milk.”

The Royal Addition Cheddar goes for $9.99 a pound at Whole Foods. But this isn’t the first time the special edition hit shelves; Westminster Cheddar, a brand owned by Somerdale International, released another Royal Addition Cheddar before Prince George was born in 2013. According to Whole Foods, it paired well with a lager beer or chenin blanc.

Westminster Cheddar, a 150-year-old British cheese brand based in Somerdale, England, is run by two families: the Helers, and the Barbers, the oldest cheddar-making family in the country.

“Somerdale works very closely with a select few Dairy farms in the U.K. to produce the best quality cheese we can. With the birth of a new royal baby, we wanted to celebrate and share this with customers in the U.S.,” says Rachel Rioch, a representative for Westminster Cheddar. “We have chosen a beautiful 12 month aged Cheddar for Royal Addition sealed in a black wax. But what makes it really exceptional is that it’s a non GMO cheddar.”

The newest royal addition (human, not cheese) arrived on Monday at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London. The baby boy weighed in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces, but his name has not yet been revealed. It’s the third child for Prince William and Kate Middleton, who already have another son, George, and a daughter, Charlotte.
