Decorative and colorful drinkware has been trending for quite a while now. From cups that are shaped like flowers to stemless wine glasses that come in cute pastel colors and everything in between, it seems like the more unique your cups are, the more stylish you are. But Reese Witherspoon just made a case for going back to the classics.

In an Instagram video first posted on June 12, she and her daughter Ava were spotted drinking sweet tea out of good old-fashioned Mason jars, and for some reason these cups scream summer louder than any flower-shaped glass ever could.

People have been using Mason jars as cups for years, and they became so popular that companies even began producing Mason jars with handles attached to them for easier sipping.

According to The Kitchn, Mason jars aren’t just a passing trend. The style has been around since 1858, thanks to John Landis Mason, a 26-year-old tinsmith from Philadelphia who first patented the jar. At the time, it was designed with a one-piece screw-on cap (made of zinc) and molded clear glass.

But Mason’s patent expired in 1879, according to The Kitchn, and 36 years later, Alexander Kerr improved the original design with a two-piece lid (that’s still used today!). The Ball Brothers ran with it, mass-producing the jars.

The rest, of course, is history, and even 166 years later, there’s still something simple and sweet about using regular Mason jars as cups. Plus, you can use them for preserving foods, preparing overnight oats, or taking your drinks on the go thanks to the security of the screw-on two-piece lid.

And one of the best things about Mason jars is that they almost always are sold in bulk, which makes them a staple you can stock up on without breaking the bank. Some are even sold in different colors, meaning you can hop on the colorful drinkware trend while still sticking to the classics.

So if you’re looking to refresh up your drinkware options, take Witherspoon’s hot tip: You can’t go wrong with the classics. Grab a box of Mason jars to give your summer table a rustic, down-home feel and you may find yourself skipping the decorative glassware trend altogether.

Bonus points if you dress up your Mason jars with lemon slices like the Witherspoons do. Now that’s summer in a jar.

Buy: Ball Glass Mason Jar, 6 Count, $16.44 (normally $21.07)
