Coming in from the cold, nothing beats a nice cup of hot cocoa — unless it’s a nice steamy mug of Nutella hot chocolate. No, you needn’t be a rosy-cheeked child to indulge. In fact, join us this happy hour for a mug of spiked (or not!) hot cocoa that everyone will love.

Whether you’re looking for the Best Mom on the Block award, wanting to warm the heart of your honey, or are simply treating yourself, this hot sip does the trick.

Nutella, for anyone who hasn’t yet had the pleasure, is a creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread. My kids love it with peanut butter, or in place of it, on PB&Js. I’ve even concocted a fab appetizer by spreading it on thinly sliced baguette and topping it with pieces of dried chorizo. Now I’m mixing it with milk and putting it on the stove for a dreamy, sweet, hot cocktail.

Toasted marshmallows are the perfect topping. Don’t worry — you can get that campfire feeling without heading outdoors. Simply place your marshmallows on a foil-lined baking sheet under the broiler for 30 to 45 seconds for perfect golden brown, gooey, toasted marshmallows.

The recipe below has a non-alcoholic version that’s perfect for the kiddos, and I’ve also included a big batch if you’re entertaining the neighbors. For kids, top with marshmallows or fresh whipped cream. For adults, you probably guessed it — we’re spiking this sip! It is happy hour after all!

Spiked (or Not!) Nutella Hot Chocolate

Serves 2

Nutritional Info

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups

    milk

  • 1/3 cup

    Nutella

  • 1

    cinnamon stick

  • 4 ounces

bourbon, Frangelico, cacao rum, or chocolate liqueur, optional

  • Whipped cream or marshmallows, to top

Instructions

  1. In a pot over medium-high heat, bring the milk to a simmer. Add the Nutella, stirring until it has melted and become incorporated. Add the cinnamon stick and bring to a simmer.

  2. Divide the bourbon between two mugs, if using (2 ounces per mug). Ladle the hot milk mixture into the mugs and serve with fresh whipped cream or marshmallows. If serving with marshmallows, toast on a foil-lined baking sheet under the broiler for 30 to 45 seconds, until golden.

Recipe Notes

Big Batch Recipe (Serves 8): Increase the amounts to 6 cups of milk, 1 1/2 cups Nutella, and 1 cinnamon stick. For spiked versions, use 2 ounces of liquor per mug.

Fat free milk, whole milk, lactose-free milk, and nut or seed milks all work here.
