When you’re looking out a frost-covered window, watching the holiday decorations blink to life on the street below, is there anything more perfect than wrapping your hands around a warm mug of mulled cider? Um, yeah, there is: it’s standing at that same window, shoving Mulled Cider & Oatmeal Cut-Out Cookies into your mouth, one after another after another.

This recipe was chosen as the winner of the 4th Annual REAL® Butter Holiday Cookie Recipe Contest, and it’s easy to see why. With cinnamon, allspice and cloves in the ingredient list, it captures some of the signature flavors of the holiday season without overdoing it. And they have a tender texture that can only come from using REAL® Butter.

The best part of these cookies might be their creative glaze. It’s made of apple juice (what?!), powdered sugar and cinnamon and gets brushed onto the cookies when they’re fresh out of the oven. (You may or may not brush it directly onto your tongue too; we’re not here to judge you.) The glaze — and the pecans you’ll sprinkle on top — adds some extra depth to the already perfect flavor of these cookies. Before you’ve finished chewing the first bite, you’ll be ready to make this an annual tradition. Regardless of the season, natural farm-to-table REAL® Butter, made with just fresh cream and perhaps a little salt for flavor, is something you can always feel good about baking with.

For the cookies:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Stir together flour, oats, orange peel, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, baking powder, allspice and cloves. Set aside.

  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat together butter and sugar on medium speed until creamy. Beat in egg, vanilla extract, almond extract and salt. Slowly add dry ingredients and mix until well combined, scraping sides of bowl as needed.

  4. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead lightly until smooth. Shape into a disk and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for 1 hour.

  5. Roll dough into a 1/4" thickness. Using a 3" stocking cutter, cut out 30 shapes. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack.

For the glaze:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, apple juice and cinnamon; glaze should run freely off of a spoon.

  2. Frost entire cookie with glaze and immediately place chopped pecans on the top of the stocking. Allow cookies to set for 30 minutes before serving.
