Reader Request: How Do You Say Cheers, and Why?
Prost! Salud! Here, here! Those would all be very acceptable ways to cheers someone before taking a drink. What do I like to say? “Cheersy pants!” You see, I have a habit of cute-ifying words — and adding the words pants to the end of sentences. (I promise, it’s more fun and endearing in real life than it sounds … I think.)
I don’t remember when I started doing this, but I’ve certainly become known for it among my friends. They all know I’m going to say it and they’ll either beat me to the punch or they’ll respond with the same cheers as if it’s a totally normal thing to say. During my bachelorette party, my best friend even surprised me and decorated our hotel room with a bespoke “Cheersy pants” banner, which she secretly made and printed out at work. (Shhh!) It was so personal and I was so touched!
The saying is a little weird, I know. But I can’t be the only one with a silly cheersing tradition.
So I want to hear from you: What do you say before your first sip?
Maybe you like to keep things simple and you go with the obvious, one-word toast? Maybe you have a cute little rhyme that your grandmother used to say and now you say it too? Maybe you customize it each time and, depending on the occasion, will cheers to health, jobs, puppies, or whatever else!
Leave your cheers in the comments! And while you’re at it, there’s more I want to know: Do you clink every single glass on the table? Will you ever cheers with water? Do you believe eye contact must be made? Do you cheers before each new drink or just at the start of the evening?
So many questions! Cheersing is serious business, it turns out!
