A sweet and generous relative sent a box of cheese and crackers to us for the holidays, and he included this Cypress Grove goat cheese — an old favorite, but not one I've had recently. Wow — I forgot how good this stuff is!

The cheese is tangy and vibrant, and flavored with lavender and wild fennel pollen. This gives it a fragrant, rather wild taste, with these herbs that evoke a sunny day in California. The lavender is not overpowering; it's not floral at all.

Drizzled with some honey and eaten with crackers or baguette, this is an utter delight. Dean & DeLuca suggests stuffing it in dates for a treat that would rival most sweet desserts.

This plus a bottle of Champagne or Riesling is really all you need for a little party made up of you and anyone you really, really like.
