Purefizz Soda Maker
Item: Purefizz Soda Maker
Price: $79.99 (on sale for $59.99 at the time of writing)
Overall Impression: Easy to use, attractive, portable, and versatile
I love my SodaStream, but a drawback to that system is that it can only be used to carbonate water, with syrups or other flavorings added later. The Purefizz, on the other hand, can carbonate any liquid. While testing it I felt like a kid in a candy store deciding what to carbonate next. Water! Fruit juice! Coffee and tea! Cocktails! If you’re a carbonated drink fiend or like inventing new beverages, you’ll probably find this a lot of fun to play with.
The Review
Characteristics and Specs: The dishwasher-safe stainless steel carafe holds about 3 cups (26.4 fl oz or 0.75 L) and measures about 11.75 inches tall with the plastic stopper. The set also includes a plastic charger cap, cartridge holder, and funnel. Made in Taiwan.
Favorite details: The Purefizz can be used to carbonate any liquid and even fruits. The sleek, minimalist bottle is easy to carry to picnics, parties, or other events and looks attractive on a dinner table or bar.
Potential problems: None encountered.
Splurge-worthy? The initial cost isn’t cheap, and cartridges are single-use. However, it could be worth it if you drink a lot of carbonated beverages or you’re a dedicated home mixologist.
Good for small kitchens? Yes. It requires minimal cabinet, countertop, or refrigerator space.
To use the Purefizz, you fill the carafe with liquid, screw on the charger cap with a CO2 cartridge inserted, shake, and then let it sit a couple minutes before releasing the CO2. Fizz and flavor strength vary according on how many times you shake it; 10-15 is the standard recommendation. In addition to straight liquid, you can also fill the bottle with liquid such as water or vodka, add fruit or herbs, and through the process of carbonation infuse the flavors into the liquid.
For table presentation or refrigerator storage, you can replace the charger cap with a black plastic stopper. Although the carafe doesn’t hold a lot — about 3 cups — it looks attractive and stays cold, eliminating any need to transfer your beverage to another container.
Carbonating requires single-use (recyclable) 8-gram CO2 cartridges, which are available from the manufacturer or other retailers such as Amazon. Prices range from $0.40 to $0.70 each depending on the source and quantity purchased.
