There are many entertaining dos and don’ts, and chief among them — at least in my opinion — is having a solid lineup of appetizers. Being from Texas, my ultimate favorite is chips and guacamole. Out of all of the get-togethers I’ve attended, during the holidays and otherwise, that combo makes the most appearances. It makes sense why: I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t love it. On top of being one of the most reliable crowd-pleasers out there, it’s low-lift to make, too.

The only tricky aspect of having guac as an appetizer is keeping it fresh before and after you serve it — if it isn’t all devoured by your guests, that is. Leftover guac seems to turn brown in the blink of an eye. There are a number of methods that people claim keep it fresh longer: The Kitchn’s personal go-to is squeezing lemon or lime juice on top. Another option that’s even easier, requiring no extra ingredients and minimizing cleanup? The editor-approved PREPWORKS Fresh Guacamole ProKeeper. It keeps guac fresh for several days longer than a regular container, and it’s only $20.

What Is the PREPWORKS Fresh Guacamole ProKeeper?

The key to the ProKeeper is its airtight construction. Guacamole starts turning an unappetizing brown color as soon as it’s exposed to the air, an enzyme in the flesh reacting to the oxygen. The sealing lid, however, keeps all of the air out and holds off the browning process for days. All you have to do is fill it and press down on it to push the air out. The bowl’s capacity is about four to five avocados, or four cups. Of course, you can use it to store and serve other dips also, running from onion to artichoke to bean dip.

Contributor Riddley put the ProKeeper to the test next to a regular plastic food storage container. After two days, the guac in the latter was almost entirely brown, but the former was largely green aside from a few spots under the lid.

“If you ever make guac ahead of time for parties, company, or even meal prep, this is a mighty helpful container to have on hand,” Riddley says. “I also really like that the container is pretty enough to set out on the table for serving.” That’s right: You don’t have to make a mess of two bowls!

What Amazon Shoppers are Saying

Average Rating: 4.3/5

“I went from throwing guacamole away after two days to it last[ing] five days. This device is amazing and very easy to use. Going on day six, and it has kept its freshness.” — Jasmine

“WOW! This thing is amazing! No browning at all if you do it right. Cleaning isn’t bad if you know to wipe the rubber gasket every time you use it. This is my new favorite kitchen gadget.” — Ana’s Attic

“Truly does what it says. I saw this on some video and thought I would try it. Worked great. I hate brown guac (yes, I know you can stir it, and it turns ‘green again.’ Just looks bad. I made some and put the leftovers in this container and pushed down the lid to push out the air. Worked great, guac stayed green, and I swear tasted better. Highly recommend.” — Cindy C.

With all of the entertaining you’re bound to do over the next month, this ingenious container will come in handy. I eat guac on the regular, so I’m planning on grabbing one to use well beyond the holiday season. Instead of messing with the numerous tricks to keep it fresh longer, you can pay the affordable price of $20 and never have to worry about it again.
