My Friend Used to Work at a High-End Steakhouse and He was Blown Away by This Mail-Order Meat
It’s no secret that I love Porter Road. I’ve reviewed the online butcher shop before and I’ve raved about their hot dogs and bratwurst. So when I found out that it was their birthday (10 years!) and that they created a special 10th Anniversary Box to celebrate, I had to try it.
Items in the box commemorate Porter Road’s history — from their beginning as a local Nashville purveyor to the company they are today. Each box includes two NY strips (or your choice of rib-eye!), two gorgeous Denver steaks, two pork chops, one pound of dry-aged ground beef, 1 pound of country breakfast sausage, a 4-pack of dry-aged hot dogs, 5 ounces of All Things Roast Seasoning, and one super-cute commemorative tote bag.
My Honest Review of Porter Road’s 10th Anniversary Box
I invited my neighbors over on a Friday afternoon for happy hour and steaks. I pulled out the NY strip, pork chop, and two Denver steaks. I seasoned one of the Denver steaks with the All Things Roast Seasoning which contains spices like smoked sea salt, horseradish powder, and ground bay leaves. I grilled the NY strip, the pork chop, and the seasoned steak. I cooked the other Denver steak in a cast iron skillet and made a pan sauce from the fond. I set it all on the counter with some roasted veggies, and asked my neighbors (one who formerly worked at a high-end steakhouse) for their honest opinions.
They were all blown away by the quality and the flavors. The Denver steaks were thick like filet mignon, tender, and full of flavor. The NY strip was perfect and on par with a rib-eye in flavor and quality. Their pork chops are some of my favorites. And the spice mix was so delicious — very versatile for meat and veggies alike. (I sprinkled it on some steak and loved it so much that I sprinkled on a little more.)
A few days later I made the best patty melts ever with the dry-aged ground beef. I griddled up some sausage patties for homemade biscuit, egg, and cheese breakfast sandos. Their grinds don’t disintegrate on your palate; they are meaty and robust in flavor.
Once again, I am reminded that the meat I find in the grocery store is nowhere near the quality of the meat I can purchase from Porter Road. Pasture-raised, hand-butchered, high-quality meat at a reasonable price point? Happy birthday to me — er, I mean, happy birthday, Porter Road!
