I Tried the New Pop-Tarts x Banner Butter Kit. Here’s My Honest Opinion.
Whether you were born in the ‘80s or grew up in the 2000s, the Pop-Tart brand is well-known for providing convenient and delicious toaster pastries for the whole family to enjoy. Though fan-favorite classics like Frosted Strawberry, Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon, and Frosted Chocolate Fudge may have found a place in your pantry at some point, the iconic company is also known for pushing boundaries with flavors like Root Beer, Watermelon, and the recently released Eggo Frosted Maple Syrup. And while there’s absolutely no wrong way to eat a Pop-Tart, over the last few years, social media has been obsessed with putting their favorite flavor in the toaster and slathering the warmed pastry with butter. And to be honest, I’ve been intrigued.
Now, Pop-Tarts is co-signing the craze by releasing a limited-edition butter kit for you to test out the deliciousness yourself. Collaborating with small batch butter producer Banner Butter, the new Pop-Tarts x Banner Butter Kit will give fans of the breakfast staple an opportunity to experiment with flavored butter on three different flavors of Pop-Tarts. While the kit won’t be available until Tuesday, November 16, I tested all of the combinations out early to let you know if it’ll be worth your time. And let’s just say, some are very interesting. Here were my favorite combinations of the many that I tried.
Honey Habanero Butter with Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts: Sweet and spicy is a classic combination and that’s exactly what I got with this duo. The deep brown sugar flavor of the Pop-Tart is amped up by the spicy habanero. While I couldn’t taste the honey, it didn’t matter because the brown sugar filling of the Pop-Tart kept this from being too spicy.
Cinnamon, Cardamom, and Ginger Butter with Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts: I would have never paired warm spices with strawberries, but I’m glad I did with this flavor combo because it’s easily one of the best of the bunch. The warm notes from the cinnamon and ginger, and the almost menthol-like flavor from the cardamom works well with the frosting and sweet strawberry filling.
Balsamic Fig and Caramelized Onion Butter with Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts: One of my favorite things in the kitchen is caramelized onions. I’ve always thought adding them to any dish makes it better, but little did I know it works with Pop-Tarts as well. The sweet onions and sharp balsamic fig worked well with the fruity strawberry flavor to enhance it, and not overpower it. This is the one combination I will be eating over and over again.
Sea Salt Butter with Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts: Sea salt butter is one of my favorite things to add to toasted bread, so naturally it was also great on Pop-Tarts. The sweet strawberry filling and sugary frosting pair well with the slightly salty butter. If you’re leery about trying buttered Pop-Tarts then this is a good introduction to the trend.
Strawberry Butter with Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts: This combination is everything I want in a breakfast pastry. The strawberry butter adds a nice fruit flavor, and when that’s combined with the warm brown sugar and cinnamon filling it’s delightful. Next time I’ll add more strawberry butter to ensure that every bite tastes the same from start to finish though.
Strawberry Butter with Frosted Chocolate Fudge Pop-Tarts: Chocolate and strawberry is a classic combination, and it continues to shine with Pop-Tarts and butter. Honestly, this tastes like a chocolate-covered strawberry, and that’s a win in my book.
Chocolate Butter with Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts: The same flavors from the strawberry butter with chocolate Pop-Tarts are present here. The crust of the Pop-Tart also enhances the flavor, and tastes like a chocolate graham cracker after the butter is spread over it.
Each Pop-Tarts x Banner Butter Kit comes equipped with three Pop-Tart flavors and six cultured butter flavors including Sea Salt, Strawberry, Chocolate, a mashup of Cinnamon, Cardamon and Ginger, Balsamic Fig and Caramelized Onion, and an exclusive Honey Habanero flavor. The kit will be available online beginning Tuesday, November 16 and will be priced at $25 while supplies last.
