Savory muffins deserve their time in the spotlight. Muffins make easy and convenient breakfasts and snack options, but they don’t all have to taste like cupcakes. Savory scones with fillings like sun-dried tomatoes or chorizo and Parmesan are always a treat when I see them, but I encounter savory scones much more often than I do non-sweet muffins. It doesn’t have to be this way!

These cheesy pizza muffins are a perfect way to experiment with the savory side of muffins. The base recipe is perfect for pepperoni-lovers, but there is a lot of room to play around with this formula. Anything you like on a pizza, you could probably put in one of these muffins. “These are easy to stir together and warm up for quick and easy lunches — for the kids and myself!” writes Amy Palanjian from Yummy Toddler Food, who recommends adding shredded carrot for some extra vegetables.

The muffins start with a neutral base of all-purpose and whole-wheat flour, with pizza seasoning to give it flavor. Shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, and diced pepperoni round out the flavor profile and give you a very basic, super-easy muffin recipe that is not at all sweet, and tastes like a pizza.

If you prefer a vegetarian pizza, you can leave out the pepperoni, or replace it with tiny pieces of broccoli. Black olives are another classic pizza topping that would be great here. What else could we try? Sausage, of course, and diced bell peppers. I love feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes on pizzas, so I think they’d work here, too. And if your favorite pizza topping happens to be pineapple, go for it! They’re your muffins, and you can do what you want.
