Ah, Pinterest. Although there’s been plenty of talk over the last few years about recipes, hacks, and inspiration that we ran across on TikTok and Instagram, nothing beats the OG of discovery sites. I mean, think about it — you can find everything you need on Pinterest. From new fashion trends to fresh ideas on what to make for dinner, the app truly has everything you need to have handy for a successful day. And while you may feel like you’re all caught up on what you need to know about what’s hot and what’s not for the current year, with 2022 being right around the corner (yes, really), the popular know-everything app wants to make sure you’re really prepared for the new year.

Releasing its annual Pinterest Predicts report on Tuesday, December 7, Pinterest is taking another shot at accurately predicting what will be trending amongst users for the upcoming year. After the success of 2021’s report — which yielded an 80 percent success rate and predicted trends like “vibey lights” and “skinimalism” — Pinterest now thinks that we can expect a huge shift in trends and in the food space specifically.

Although this year was all about bread, cake pops, and pies, Pinterest claims that in 2022 we can expect to see a few futuristic-influenced sweets taking over, including gravity-defying cakes — which have seen a 70 percent search increase year over year — 3D cakes, and bubble cakes. Now, if you’re thinking “that’s totally a Gen Z thing,” according to Pinterest, this trend is actually very popular among millennials, the Gen X crowd, and boomers. Both unusual cakes and art cakes are also expected to make a huge leap into the spotlight in 2022, too.

So, what else can you expect to see for the new year? Well for one, a lot more tea sipping … and I’m not talking about those memes you see of Kermit. Pinterest predicts that afternoon tea will become the new happy hour, calling it “a moment, an aesthetic, a pose.” Vintage tea parties, drinking tea poses, and high tea ideas have all seen upticks in searches.

Additionally, more family recipes will find themselves climbing the popularity chart in 2022, as the trend report cites Gen X and boomers will go back to the basics and embrace their ancestral eating roots. Both traditional Norwegian and traditional South African recipes have seen a respective 120 and 150 percent search increase, landing them a spot amongst those with the most potential to be revived in the new year.

Other trends found in this year’s report include new beauty expectancies (spoiler alert: natural hair and rebel cuts are totally in!), altbashes (parties for life’s under-celebrated moments), a real revival of goth clothing, the return of checkerboard patterns, emotional escape rooms, rounded designs for the home, car upgrades, tapping into your inner-kid, and so much more.

So, if you’re looking to get ahead of the curve for 2022, you can find the full Pinterest Predicts report here.
