Amongst my family and friends, I’m known for my love of candles. It began years ago, but after working at Anthropologie in college and becoming obsessed with its signature Volcano candle (IYKYK), it’s become even more intense. I’m burning a candle every evening these days, and it’s become something of a self care routine. The only aspect I’m not a huge fan of is tossing the vessel in the trash after it’s run out. It feels wasteful, but what other option is there?

Small-batch, Nashville-based candlemaker Paddywax is offering another one. The brand’s jars are meant to be repurposed after the candle reaches its end, but instead of becoming a catch-all like most others on the market, it has a collection that converts into a food-safe (and absolutely stunning) drinking glass. As someone who can’t get enough of glassware, I was more than excited to give the La Playa Orange Blossom candle a try — and even more excited to test out the margarita recipe it comes with. I’m already planning on snagging one in every color to round out my collection of artisan-made cups. Find out exactly why below.

What is Paddywax’s La Playa Candle?

The beach vibes are strong with this gem, so it’s truly a must-have for summer. Not only does it offer a musky citrus scent — with notes of bergamot, orange blossom, lilac and more — that’s fitting for the season, it also comes in a gorgeous bubble glass. Each one is made of recycled materials, which is melted down and hand-blown by artisans in Mexico. That process makes every vessel entirely unique, so your glassware collection will be even more special.

A fun bonus is that the brand includes its favorite margarita recipe on the back of the dust cover, so once you clean out the wax, you’ll be ready to make a delicious cocktail to put in your glass. The Orange Blossom, true to its name, has a dark orange rim with a body that has a cloudy transparency. It also comes in Salted Blue Agave (which is blue), Amber and Coconut (white), and Vanilla Rosa (dark brown). On Amazon, there’s another version called Cactus Flower Bamboo, which has a green rim. If you fall in love with one scent, you can grab multiple for a matching set, or mix and match for a more eclectic look.

Why I Love Paddywax’s La Playa Candle

What’s not to love about this sustainable candle? Instead of having to ditch the container every single time, you can build out a collection of glasses that no one else has, and you’re getting two for the price of one. In my experience, most high-quality candles cost at least $30. This way, you’re getting way more use out of it for the price — and this candle is certainly top-notch. It burns for up to 40 hours, and the scent it emits is complex and rich. It filled up my entire bedroom every time I lit it. The glow through the bubble glass is soft and atmospheric, to top it all off.

The true payoff, however, was when the wax reached its end. I followed the instructions and placed it in the freezer overnight, but the wax didn’t pop right out like I was expecting. Instead, I ran some hot water over it, easily scooping it out that way. I popped the jar in the dishwasher for a more thorough cleaning, and it came out shiny and spotless.

After gathering all of the ingredients for Paddywax’s margarita, I got to work, and the result was a refreshing cocktail that was just the right amount of sweet. While I sipped, the glass was comfortable to hold, if a bit wide. The whole experience felt more special than pulling out my standard cups from Target; I can’t wait to have friends over for drinks and bring out these bad boys. That’s right: I’m totally going to grab one in every color. While I’m at it, I’ll probably snag a few for gifts because there’s no way that this wouldn’t be a hit with everyone. Trust me, you need this for summer!
