This $12 OXO Peeler Is the Most Versatile Tool in My Kitchen — I’ve Had It for More than a Decade

I grew up using a Y-shaped peeler, which my mom thought was safest for kids. It became so comfortable in my hand that, to this day, whenever I pick up a swivel peeler in someone else’s kitchen, it takes me a few tries to get the right grip. I’m never as quick or effective with a straight peeler, which needs such a firm grasp that my hand gets sore before I finish a pile of potatoes.

A Y-shape peeler may seem an odd choice — especially because I have a tiny kitchen and they can take up space with their flared tops, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. And I wouldn’t want any other peeler than the OXO Good Grips Y Peeler

The OXO peeler’s handle may be bulkier than their swivel counterparts, but that extra padding makes it super comfortable whether you’re peeling the outer layer from vegetables or using it like a mandoline to get long, thin shavings.

In fact, that’s exactly what I do with carrots. They add crunch to a salad, but carrot rounds are too hard unless I get the thickness just right. So when I want to mix raw carrots with soft greens, cucumbers, and tomatoes, I grab my OXO peeler to create wide ribbons. The crunch remains, but each mouthful feels more balanced.

When I peel carrots in this way, I can also layer them onto sandwiches or burgers. Yes, I could use a mandoline for the same effect, but it’s scary to put my fingers that close to the blade. To convert the strips into crispy snacks, I toss them with a marinade and roast them. Or to make them last, I toss them with salt and ferment them.

I also reach for Y-shaped OXO peeler to create wide strips of citrus like oranges, lemons, and limes to garnish Old Fashioned or Bee’s Knees cocktails; to infuse brine for jars of refrigerator pickles; and to drop into mugs of tea. It’s my tool of choice for mangos, winter squash, and even the dark green skin of a watermelon so that I can pickle the rest of the rind. Oh, and did I mention it’s great for shaving some Parmesan

If you’ve tried a Y-shaped peeler and didn’t like it, try hiding your straight swivel peeler for a few weeks and give a Y-peeler a real chance to shine. It takes a slightly different technique, pulling down the length of whatever you’re peeling rather than holding the handle perpendicular to it, but in my opinion, a Y-shaped peeler is the most versatile style you could own. I certainly haven’t wanted anything else.
