There are certain foods that only make an appearance during the holidays. We wait all year to indulge in panettone, gingerbread, and savory stuffing (though if it were up to me, stuffing would be on the menu all year long).

It really starts to feel like the most wonderful time of year when festively decorated eggnog cartons make an appearance in the grocery store dairy aisle. This year, I’m thrilled that after a year’s hiatus, my favorite dairy brand, Organic Valley has relaunched its beloved eggnog to make our celebrations a touch sweeter and creamier.

What’s So Great About Organic Valley Reduced Fat Eggnog?

I’m typically a full-fat dairy girl all the way. Whether I’m having cottage cheese for breakfast or ordering a cappuccino, it’s whole milk for me. I love the lusher texture and extra flavor you get from milk fat. I was a fan of the original version of Organic Valley eggnog, which was about as rich and thick as they come.

So I was surprised to see that the brand’s refreshed eggnog recipe is made with reduced-fat milk (or rather, a mixture of cream and fat-free milk). I was skeptical at first; after all, if you’re going to drink a mug of what’s essentially loosened-up custard, who cares about the extra 33% fat? Me! That’s who … or so I thought.

My first sip of the revamped product changed my mind. The slightly lower fat content produces a silky smooth drink that’s sippable and light, but still feels festive, indulgent, and dessert-like. If you’re enjoying nog alongside typical holiday fare that doesn’t skimp on carbs, butter, and rich protein, it’s nice not to have the extra weight of a full-fat dairy drink (and to reserve some stomach space).

What’s the Best Way to Serve Organic Valley Reduced Fat Eggnog?

The eggnog has a touch of warming spice from nutmeg and a gentle sweetness that’s not overpowering. It’s delicious straight from the carton and can be enjoyed chilled or warm. For an adult treat, add a splash of rum to your mug.

Or, if you’re hosting a crowd, fill a pretty punch bowl with a few cartons of Organic Valley nog and let guests fill their own mugs to sip on. They can top their eggnog with a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice. Or, for a morning treat, swap out the milk or cream in your coffee with eggnog to get into the festive spirit.
