We love salt. And one of our favorite finishing salts is Maldon Crystal Salt. This is the stuff to keep on your table and sprinkle over food just before you eat it.

The family-owned company is based in Essex in the south eastern corner of England. They still use the traditional method of taking their salt from seawater using long-handled rakes. With traces of minerals from the sea, the taste is stronger so you use less. The soft pillowy crystals dissolve easily. Click here to read about how it’s made.

Jenny, our wine writer says “I had a moment yesterday while eating tapas. Maldon sea salt was awesome sprinkled over some grilled peppers. Soft and flaky like kosher salt, it was the perfect salt to dust on an equally soft food. I immediately ran out and bought a box for home.”

Maldon is available in 8.5oz boxes at many gourmet grocers, or online at:

The Spice House ($4.99)
Saltworks ($6.50 or $66 for a case of 12!)
Williams-Sonoma ($8.50)
