Is there anything more treasured than an unsolicited recommendation from someone you trust? Okay, sure, maybe a few things — but if someone with good taste raves about something unprompted, I’m all ears. It’s how I learned about NOH Hawaiian Poke Mix

Specifically, while visiting my aunt and uncle, my uncle pulled a few packets out of his pantry and pressed them into my hand, insisting I take them home with me. Here’s why.

What’s So Great About NOH Hawaiian Poke Mix?

My aunt and uncle scratch-cook everything, including homemade tofu and the tare for their noodles. Even they know the value of a quality convenience product when they see it. Poke is not hard or time-consuming to make, and while shoyu poke uses common ingredients, the Hawaiian-style poke with rock salt and ogo seaweed requires some speciality sourcing.

Yes, you can buy those things separately in larger quantities, but NOH Hawaiian Poke Mix takes the guesswork out of everything. No measuring, no rooting around the cabinet for the correct type of salt — just rip open the packet and dinner is ready in five minutes.

It’s one of my favorite meals on a hot summer day when I absolutely cannot be bothered to cook. It’s also the perfect compromise when I don’t want to spend on takeout or make a mess in the kitchen. Truly, it’s hard to put a price on that kind of convenience. Except NOH does — it’s just $6.99.

What’s the Best Way to Use NOH Hawaiian Poke Mix?

The first step is to rehydrate the ogo. Simply add it to a bowl with cold water while you dice a pound of fish or tofu into 3/4-inch cubes. Drain the ogo and roughly chop it.

In a large bowl, add the diced fish or tofu and ogo, plus the packet with the rock salt and chili pepper in a bowl and stir to combine. Drizzle over some sesame seed oil, chopped green onions, and crushed macadamia nuts if you like. They make nice additions without going full-blown poke bowl. Serve over hot steamed rice.
