Nationwide Food Section Roundup: Holiday Cookies and More No-Knead Bread

Cookie contests, quick meals and yes, more no-knead bread rule the nationwide food sections this week.

No-knead bread! It has a life of its own, and in Washington D.C. Nancy Baggett is simplifying Lahey's recipe and offering new ways to enjoy no-knead bread. She has recipes for slow rise wheat bread as well as cinnamon raisin and caraway-beer.

The paper also has a guide to staples for the winter bar and an article on artisan-cured meats. Their fast weeknight dinner recipe is Fish Soft Tacos with Black Bean Aoli.

In Los Angeles they sing the praises of underrated parsnips and kale. They also look at upscale tailgate recipes (pork chops stuffed with goat cheese, bacon and spinach!), food gifts for the holidays, and vegetarian party food. With recipes like squash gnocchi with sage butter and wild mushroom strudel no one will be missing the meat.

In Chicago there's the winners of this year's cookie contest. First place went to Tropical Nuevo Cookies. They also share Dessert Pancakes for Hanukkah, and a story about fishing on the Great Lakes. Also check out soups that can boost your immune system.

Minneapolis held a cookie contest too. Their winner: Orange Chocolate Cookies. We want to try one of the finalists: Chai Crescents. They also have a recipe for a classic potato gratin with Boursin cheese, and broccoli rabe with kalamatas, capers and pine nuts.
