Welcome to Kitchn’s series My Healthy Morning, where we show you how one person greets the day in a way that makes them feel their best. Each post will chronicle how that person defines healthy for themselves, and the habits and recipes that make their morning a little bit better.

If you’ve ever felt like wellness bloggers can be a little prescriptive, then you need to meet Lee Hersh. She is the voice and founder behind Fit Foodie Finds, a lifestyle website dedicated to helping people make balanced choices when it comes to food and exercise. Hersh is open about her past struggles with disordered eating, and the dangers of being too obsessed or too extreme with one’s diet. That’s why nothing is off-limits to Hersh. She’ll have oatmeal for breakfast and then drink beer with dinner. It works for her and it’s incredibly refreshing to read about. Also, she takes really pretty photos. Like, really pretty.

We visited Hersh at her home in Minneapolis to get a peek into her morning routine and how she defines “healthy.” Here’s what she eats normally and what she does to work out.

What Does Healthy Mean to You?

I am a firm believer that there is no one definition of healthy. As someone who has had an obsessive and poor relationship with my health in the past, balance is the first word that comes to mind when I think of the word healthy. I believe in fueling your body with real food and exercising regularly. I also believe that there should be no rules or restrictions when it comes to nutrition or fitness. This means eating mostly healthy, but not feeling bad splurging on a cookie or a beer (yes, I drink beer!) and listening to your body and taking workout breaks when needed.

My Healthy Morning Routine

I typically wake up at 6 a.m. I am the kind of person who jumps out of bed ready to crush the day. I set an alarm on my iPhone, but often times wake up before it rings (hello, morning person!). I immediately eat breakfast, drink a big glass of water, and make coffee.

If we’re being real, a girl’s gotta poop before her morning workout. I am a sweet breakfast kind of girl, and my go-to choice is a fiber-filled bowl of oatmeal (like this) topped with berries, banana, and nut butter. I am also a coffee snob. I grind my local beans and prepare a French press so that I can enjoy some fresh coffee and have some leftover for my boyfriend when he wakes up. I prefer a slow morning and like to clear my inbox and watch the news while simultaneously eating breakfast. There’s something about uninterrupted email time when no one else is awake.

At 7:45 a.m. Mark (my boyfriend) and I meet Linley (Fit Foodie Finds’ right-hand lady) for our morning sweat session. We either work out at Switch Minneapolis, a circuit/HIIT training gym, or in my condo complex’s gym. I love Switch, but I also love doing Health Glow Guide workouts at home. If I’ve only got 30 to 45 minutes, I’ll pull up an HGG Strong workout and bang it out in no time! My workout of the day with my two favorite people is magical. I love how exercise energizes me and it’s also one hour during my entire day that I’m disconnected.

Post workout, the crew heads back to Fit Foodie HQ where we refuel with a high-protein snack such as some egg cups, a protein smoothie made with Organic Fuel, or Lorissa’s Kitchen. Now it’s time to create a plan for the day so that we can be strategic and feel accomplished once the day is done!

Thanks, Lee, for sharing your morning routine with us!
