Name: Melissa
Location: Greenbelt, MD
Type of space: Balcony
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: I love to garden and produce my own food but I live in a condo. The space is small (11x6ft) and only receives direct sunlight until noon… I do love a challenge.

How did you create it? The tomatoes and peppers are in self-watering planters made from plastic pots or cat litter buckets. A 4×2 foot wooden box has zucchini, beans and a few left-over plants.

The plants are heirloom from seed, random things picked up from the farmers market, and the mandatory Burpee Better Boy.

Recommended store, site, product or resource? I like Seedsavers.org for heirloom seeds.
The planters are based on Earthboxes (earthbox.com or tutorials like The Dearthbox – A Low-Cost Self-Watering Planter).

The wooden box follows Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening method.
