Name: April
Location: Long Beach, CA
Type of space: Herb and vegetable garden
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: I love being able to go outside and watch my vegetables and herbs grow. It's also the perfect spot to read a good book, enjoy a drink and breathe in the aroma of lavender, rosemary and thyme.

How did you create it? After starting a small container garden for my vegetables and herbs my husband and I decided to dig up the lawn from our side yard to create an entire edible garden.

The first weekend we concentrated on removing all the grass, tilling the soil and making the ground as level as possible. Then my husband built three raised beds. We filled the beds with compost and soil and then with vegetable and herb seedlings. To help keep the grass from growing back we covered the ground with newspaper and then topped that with small rocks.

With the limited space and wanting to include as much variety as possible we also have fruit trees, kept in containers, to further add to the wonderful produce we can pick fresh from the garden.

Recommended store, site, product or resource? All my vegetables and herbs are from H&H Nursery in Lakewood, CA.
