When I received this Crate and Barrel platter as a wedding gift last year, my first thought was, It’s so small! Indeed, at 9-by-7 inches, the Madison Small Oval Platter is not the one to serve heaping platters of meats to a big crowd of friends. But how often does a two-person family eat heaping platters of meat or feed more than six people at a time? The truth is, this little platter is used more than any other in my household.

If you look closely, you’ll notice it shows up frequently in the photos I take for The Kitchn. That’s because everything looks beautiful on the smooth, glowing white oval of this plate. And thanks to its smaller size, even modest portions look generous, making it the perfect serving dish for two-person weeknight dinners or meals with a lot of smaller-scale sides.

I also use it at parties, usually to hold a single type of appetizer, like a big pile of prosciutto-wrapped arugula. I even find myself pulling it out when I’m just putting together a little afternoon snack for myself — it makes even no-frills crackers and cheese look a little fancier.
